On Saturday, we met with the interior designers we have selected to help us make Belle Grove the beautiful place it once was. These interior designers are the owners of “The House Key” Antiques and Interiors located in Yorktown, Virginia. They have experience in designing interiors for many other historic plantation in Virginia.
We sat down with our floor plans for Belle Grove and discussed our visions of each of the rooms. We talked about the four master rooms we will be renting as the bed and breakfast and how we have named each for families that once lived at Belle Grove. It is our desire to have the room reflect the period when the family lived at Belle Grove. We also talked about each of the other common spaces and what we see for each of them.
Now the designers will get to work pulling together colors, patterns and fabrics that we will want for each room. Once they have their ideas down, we will return to approve these. After that, we will need to make sure the paint or paper in each room matches those of the designers. While all that is going on, the designer will be pulling together furniture choices for us to approve. This has to be the best part of getting the house ready for me! Time to go shopping!
Here are some of the items that “The House Key” currently has in their store. We love going and seeing what new treasures they have discovered!

Looks gorgeous!
Thank you!
LOVE! LOVE! LOVE!
That store looks awesome!! I could spend hours in there! I can’t wait to see your vision for the Plantation!! I love the pic of the Hurley look a like!
Thank you! It was the first thing I saw when we started looking around! And I too could be there for days!
Thank you! I can’t wait to see what they do to Belle Grove!
Great choices. Cannot wait to see the finished rooms and entire mansion!
Thank you! We can’t either!
The fun is beginning. When I saw the title I had memories come flooding back of when I had received house keys in the past. That was when the fun began as I was able to start moving things into my house. I think it is a great name for a decorating business as I am sure it also brings back many memories for their customers.
Thank you! Yes, now this part I can get into. And when we finally get the real house key will be a day we will always remember!
Love that hanging light especially. What a beautiful shape. It’s going to be fabulous!
Thank you! Well, the hanging lights aren’t going into the mansion. I just thought they were cool. They are a little to modern for Belle Grove
I would give my left arm to own an antique bed. I loved the telephone!
Don’t give your right arm! Just wait and come stay with us! We will share
I am so envious of the many antique shops you have access to. LOVE your choices!
Thank you! We have had some really good times looking around. Now its time to make some decisions!
How fun this part is! Did you select the painting of Hurley?
Thank you! No, I don’t think we are going to select it. But we may have to have some of the artist we are meeting do one of him for us!
Beautiful furniture! The history!
Thank you! Yes what history we will be living with!
Fabulous shopping. A dream. Everything is going to be just perfect for you. Virginia
Thank you! There are so many decisions yet to make… my head is spinning!
Another example of why the phrase:
“They just don’t make things like they used too” is one for the ages – -
The craftsmanship and unique design details on your choices just amaze me, even though I’m a antique shop troller – the detail lovingly added to pieces of old always makes me see the best in humanity – -
Very well put! Yes we love the way they use to make it! Thank you!
Antiques galore! How fun
Yes, my head is spinning! Thank you!
SO exciting! I’ve been antique shopping in Yorktown! I ran out of time
Hope you all enjoy all the creative days ahead!
Love to antique shop Yorktown and anywhere! Yes the days ahead are going to make those we waited worth it all!
Nice choices! I can’t wait to see how everything comes together.
Thank you! We can’t wait either!
I know you have taken pictures and they are lovely, but i just want to come in and photograph! but perhaps I should wait until you open.
You know if you are close, we are looking for someone who does photograph that can help us with pictures of the plantation for the website
I’m too far I think we determined before I was like 3 hours away or more. I am in Strasburg near the other Belle Grove.
Aw! Well, you can still come some day when we open and have a grand time shooting until your hearts content! And we plan to have photography retreats too!
Can’t wait!
What lovely things. Love the slipper chairs. You are going to have so much fun decorating.
Thank you! Yes I am! Just so many choices!
Oops I left my reply in the wrong spot, I love that store you went too! I could spend hours there! I can’t wait to see your vision come together at the Plantation! The pic of the Hurley look-a-like is awesome!
It’s okay! We got it!
I would like to stay in the room with the Eastlake bed. Make a note.
Anne, I will do that. It will be the Hipkins-Bernard Room. It will be located in the North Wing of the house and will have a view of the plantation. The family it was named after lived at the plantation from 1790 to 1839.
Yay! The plantation will be gorgeous! I hope I get to experience it someday. Have fun!
Thank you! We hope you will too!
So much fun! And I was just about to say that you better snag that portrait of “Hurley”!
I think we are going to wait and have some of the wonderful artist that are following us come and help us out with a paint of him. Thanks!
Love the Federalist sideboard you have selected. The painting of Hurley or his look=alike is also nice. Like the patterned chair, but the blue velvet will need recovering…soon.
Are you going for late seventeenth or early eighteenth look?
Dianne
Thank you! The plantation spans so many years we could do almost anything. But I think the common areas will be mostly early 1800s. But we may mix in others to show the years of the mansion. But the rooms will be period to the families they are named for. Don’t worry, the interior designer has in house workers to refunish anything we pick.
I meant late eighteenth or early nineteenth of course.
I understood
It must be getting to be quite exciting now.
Laurie and I may have to get to your way of the country for a visit when our schedule permits, or should a conference arise.
It is getting really exciting! Just so many choices! We also hope to see you both some day soon!
I love the bed – it is those high headboards. It is in very good condition. Beautiful finds.
Thank you! I saw it and fell in love with it.
nice images…….
Thank you!
Your welcome
EVERYTHING is so pretty!
Thank you! We can’t wait to see it at the plantation!
That is neat how you show the behind the scenes goings on making the place come to life!
Thank you! It is fun sharing the excitement and joy!
The love seat is really something, as is the carving about that blue chair. You have great taste!
Thank you! The fabrics may not stay the same, but the we love the chairs!
