A week from today, almost to the minute, Brett and I will be heading to our first public hearing for the Planning Commission for our Zoning Permit. I can’t tell you how long this has felt like, but I can tell you that we are so excited! We are asking anyone in the area of Belle Grove (Fredericksburg, Stafford, King George, Port Royal and others) to please consider coming to support us! The Meeting will be held at the follow:

King George County Planning Commission Meeting

Board Room of the Revercomb Building

10459 Courthouse Drive

King George, Virginia 22485

 7:00 pm

Thumbs Up

We could use all the support we can get!

Want to see the Plantation before we open?

Here’s  you chance!

This weekend we are heading up to the plantation on late Friday night. Then on Saturday we are going to be tackling the bricks that lay around the house in the old walkways. We are going to pull them and stage them for use in walkways and the front gate entry when we start working on the landscaping. Anyone that would like to join us, we welcome the help! Just come by the plantation! We should be getting started around 11am. Who knows, we may find an artifact or two! Free tour of the plantation to those that join us!

Donations Needed!

We have added a donation button located at the top left side of our blog! We are working really hard to put together funds to do the needed improvements on the outbuildings. These priceless pieces of living history are still standing and have an awesome story to tell! We have three buildings; Ice House, Smokehouse (in the worse condition) and Summer Kitchen. The Summer Kitchen is half kitchen and half slave quarters. We hope to open the Summer Kitchen as a small museum. The kitchen side will tell the story of the plantation and the families that lived there. The slave quarter side will tell the story of the slaves that lived, served and died on this plantation. Please help us by making a donation, big or small, it means the world to us and this plantation!

The Donations are through Paypal. But if you don’t have a Paypal account, look to the bottom left side of the Paypal page. You can may a donation using your credit card! Secure and Safe!

Thank you for any help!

How far is Middleton from Williamsburg? My step son and family live in Hampton, near Williamsburg. We’d love to see your place one day!

    • Well, the Belle Grove in Middleton isn’t our Belle Grove. That Belle Grove was built in 1797 by Isaac Hite and his wife Nelly Madison Hite, sister of James Madison. Our Belle Grove is located just 20 miles south of Fredericksburg. Our plantation is where James Madison’s mom, Nelly Conway Madison was born and grew up. It was our plantation that she returned to when she had James Madison. Our house was built in 1791 after the home James Madison was born in burn down. When The Hites named their plantation, Nelly Hite named their plantation after ours.

But to answer your question, we are 2 hours down Rt 17 to Rt 301 from Hampton Roads area. We currently live in Chesapeake and travel to the plantation on the weekends until we open. We would love to see you some day!

This is SO freaking awesome! I love history and love that you’re doing this! We’re in VA about once or twice a year (it’s a 14 hour drive from our place in MO). In 2011, I spent the entire summer taking care of my oldest granddaughter while we were waiting for the second granddaughter to be born. I got to know the area fairly well. I took the baby on a trip through Chesapeake one day and spend many days in VA Beach and Williamsburg.

Now we have another little destination / road trip to look forward to while our son is stationed at Langley 😉 I’ll be watching to see what’s going on with your progress! Thanks for sharing your journey and for clarifying which location.

      • Awesome! We really look forward to sharing the plantation with you soon! Thank you!

  8. would love to see the place, rooting for you, praying that everything will work out. blessings

Good luck with the zoning. In Chicago, you’d need the help of your Alderman. Hopefully it is more sane in Virginia.

  12. JulesPaige says:

I wish I were closer. I’d love to come and help dig in your dirt! Hopefully the support of my positive thoughts will help. I’m still looking forward to when you do open so maybe I can surprise my hubby with a weekend away! Even if it isn’t for our anniversary.
